Southern Seaweeds was established in 2022 after six years of research and development by parent company Southern Clams. Southern Clams is both a sponsor and member of ANZSA, the Aotearoa New Zealand Seaweed Association.
The beginnings of Southern Seaweed were based on the enthusiasm of Southern Clams Owner and Founder Roger Belton. Southern Seaweeds aims to stimulate the niche-but-growing seaweed market in New Zealand, and provide a premium product for global consumers. By harvesting in the cold clear waters of New Zealand’s South Island, we believe that we can produce some of the finest seaweed on the planet.

What we do
Using the 40 years of experience of parent company Southern Clams, Southern Seaweeds can harvest and process seaweed species to maximise food safety and the nutritional benefits of seaweed. Southern Seaweeds (through Southern Clams) provides wholesale dried Wakame seaweed to customers around New Zealand.
As all our products are produced to a high standard, we can also supply into the stock and pet food markets. This is the area with the highest uptake of our Wakame to date. Our seaweed has also been used for bioextraction and fertiliser.
The high quality of our wild-grown seaweed from clean, clear waters also makes it an excellent option for use in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products.
The biggest producers of farmed seaweed worldwide are China, Japan and South Korea. We will not be able to match these countries in the scale of their production, but our wild-harvested seaweed from the cold, clean waters of New Zealand’s South Island should more than match them in terms of quality.
