SOUTHERN SEAWEEDS UTILISES WILD-GROWING POPULATIONS TO PRODUCE HIGH-QUALITY FROZEN AND DRIED SEAWEED

Since 2016, Southern Seaweeds has been undertaking research on harvesting and processing seaweed from the South Island marine environment. With the increase in awareness and demand for seaweed in the New Zealand market, Southern Seaweeds aims to be a producer of high-quality seaweed.

Mainly focusing on Undaria pinnatifida (known as Wakame in its native Japan), Southern Seaweeds is helping to pioneer the algacultural industry in New Zealand. Undaria  is currently classified as a pest species by many. While the legislation makes harvesting difficult, Southern Seaweeds relies on the experience of its team to utilise an underappreciated resource.

The cold clear waters of the South Island provide excellent growing conditions for a range of seaweed in the wild. Southern Seaweeds is currently specialising in harvesting wild-growing seaweed, while continuing to be involved in the quest to establish seaweed aquaculture in New Zealand.

WAKAME

The brown seaweed species Undaria pinnatifida, (known as Wakame in Japan) grows throughout New Zealand. It is classified as a pest species but can be harvested with the right knowledge and techniques.

WHY SEAWEED?

Seaweed has a lot of health benefits when included in the diet. It contains many antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, including calcium, magnesium and omega-3.

Seaweed can also help the environment, removing CO2 from the oceans and the surrounding atmosphere making it potentially suitable for carbon farming.
